When Apple's mother returns after eleven years away, Apple feels whole again. But just like the stormy Christmas Eve when she left, her mother's homecoming is bittersweet. It's only when Apple meets someone more lost than she is that she begins to see things as they really are.

I wasn't sure what I was going to get out of this book and what was going to happen. I did end up enjoying this book however, it is really for suited for those who are in years 7-10.
Apple has lived with her Nana for the past 11 years when her mother went off to the US to be on Broadway and her father remarried and his wife doesn't really like Apple. However, finally Apple's wish comes true her mother is home and wants her to live with her.
What Apple doesn't find out until she goes and moves in with her mum is that she has a half sister: Rain. I really wasn't a fan of Apple and Rain's mother she was just not fit to be a mum. I kept wishing throughout the story that Apple would take herself and Rain to her Nana's because that would have avoided the some of the events that take place in the book and helped Apple not think that she had to look after her mother and sister so much.
At school, English class was really Apple's savoir with the poetry classes that they were having. With the assignments she was able to convey all her feelings that she had with what was going on in her life her best friend not really her best friend anymore, her mother and sister and the boy next door Del. I loved Del he was a great addition to the story with him being a friend just when Apple needed him the most. The relationship development that happens between Apple and Del throughout the story is what I loved most about the book, apart from the way that it was set out into different parts to fit what they were studying in class that week.
The events leading up to the ending are bittersweet with things that you do want to happen and others that you don't want to. Apple and Rain is a journey of a young girls need to find out who she is and who she can be through life and poetry.
